The Leaning Tower of Brotenstown!
A structural inspection of the bell tower at Brotenstown Church was carried out in late 2011.
On inspection it was determined that the steel structure supporting the roof over the bell has suffered from significant corrosion. This corrosion, if not dealt with, could worsen rapidly and might cause the roof to become a hazard. It was recommended that remedial works be carried out to replace the corroded steel members.
That work began on 16 January 2012. It involves the removal of the existing roof structure above the bell, replacement of the steel structure, refitting the existing timber structure and re‐covering the roof with new roof covering. The timber eaves and fascia are also being replaced.
It is hoped that this work will ensure the integrity of the structure and the safety of people coming to Mass in Brotenstown.
